Steps for ID injection
(After greeting patient and introduction)
- Wash/sanitize hands
- Gather correct syringe/ needle based on the order given
- Verify the right medication, dose, route, patient, and time by comparing the order with the label on medication container
- Prepare Syringe and vial: withdraw correct dosage of 0.1 mL.
- Ask patient if they’ve ever had a positive reaction to a PPD. If no: proceed.
- position self lower than the patient
7.Select injection location down the mid anterior aspect of arm, avoid any scarred, discolored, or pigmented areas - Clean with alcohol wipe
- Uncap needle, hold needle facing MA with right hand, and stretch skin with left hand. Do not aspirate, release medication, until you see bubble
- remove needle from forearm, safety the needle on table
- Dispose needle in sharps container, and dispose gloves in biohazard and sanitize hands
- Document the procedure and location of injection.

Steps for a subcutaneous injection
(After greeting patient and introduction)
- Wash/sanitize hands
- Gather correct syringe/ needle based on the order given
- Verify the right medication, dose, route, patient, and time by comparing the order with the label on medication container
- Prepare Syringe and vial: withdraw correct dosage of 0.5 mL.
- Take medication to patient, ask them to sit upright and to expose upper posterior arm (make sure clothing will not fall)
- Sanitize area, uncap needle
- grasp fatty tissue, hold needle in 45 degree angle
- Insert, release left hand, aspirate and push in medication slowly until administered
- Remove needle, safety needle on table, massage medication.
- Add bandaid and throw syringe in sharps container. Cotton in biohazard
- Document procedure, medication/ dosage, lot number, expiration date, arm location, and initials.

Steps for a Intramuscular injection
(After greeting patient and introduction)
- Wash/sanitize hands
- Gather correct syringe/ needle based on the order given
- Verify the right medication, dose, route, patient, and time by comparing the order with the label on medication container
- Prepare Syringe and vial: withdraw correct dosage of 0.5 mL.
- Take medication to patient, ask them to sit upright and to expose deltoid located 2-3 finger widths from acromial process. (make sure clothing will not fall)
- Sanitize area, uncap needle
- grasp muscle with left hand, hold needle on right hand in a 90 degree angle
- Insert, release left hand and aspirate needle and push in medication slowly until medication is administered.
- Remove needle, safety needle on table, massage medication.
- Add bandaid and throw syringe in sharps container. Cotton in biohazard
- Document procedure, medication/ dosage, lot number, expiration date, arm location, and initials.
