Explain the four functional modes of operation for the AN/ARN-153.

Answer 1

R MODE: the TACAN system calculates and displays the bearing the surface beacon, course deviation, and to-from information.

TR MODE: the TACAN system calculates and displays slant range distance to the selected TACAN surface station, bearing, and course deviation information.

AAR MODE: the TACAN system operates as described in the R mode, with the exception that the bearing information is received from a properly equipped TACAN aircraft.

AATR MODE: the bearing and distance information is received from a TACAN properly equipped aircraft. Use either pre-assigned channel pairings or establish channel pairings with a 63-channel separation.

What are the standards for Task 1184: Respond to Inadvertent Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IIMC)?

Answer 2

1. Announce “IMC”, maintain proper aircraft control and make transition to instrument flight immediately.
2. Immediately initiate a climb.
3. Continue IIMC recovery procedures as follows:
   a) Attitude - level the wings and adjust pitch for desired airspeed while maintaining the aircraft in trim
   b) Heading - maintain heading; turn only to avoid known obstacles
   c) TQ - maintain climb pwr until reaching appropriate cruise altitude
   d) Airspeed - adjust to appropriate climb airspeed
   e) Altitude - climb to minimum safe altitude as prescribed by the DOD FLIP, local regulations or SOP after establishing aircraft control.
4. Contact ATC, as required. Comply with ATC instructions and complete the IIMC recovery IAW local regulations and SOP.

Discuss the two navigational modes for the TACAN.

TCN MODE: provides lateral guidance to track a selected TACAN course. TACAN course is entered through the CDU.
TCNP MODE: TACAN point-to-point mode provides guidance to fly a direct path to a selected TACAN radial and DME distance. The TACAN radial and DME distance is entered on the TACAN control page.
