Define intermolecular forces
Only exist between covalently bonded molecules
Not bonds
Name and describe the 2 types of intermolecular forces
Hydrogen bonding: occurs when a hydrogen is directly bonded to oxygen, nitrogen or fluorine of another molecule. Strong forces = higher melting and boiling points
Van der Waals Force: Occurs in everything else. Forces are weaker so they result in lower melting and boiling points. The greater the number of electrons, the stronger the Van der Waals forces and the higher the melting and boiling point
