Why do you want to be a Delta?

A
  • Deeply resonate with the dedication to sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action
  • As a little girl, I felt a calling to be a part and contribute to something bigger than myself, which pushed me to excel personally, academically, and professionally.
  • Stepping was introduced to me in the third grade by a members, and it showed me the power of community and collaboration.
  • Helping small Black-owned business thrive through helping them with brand marketing
  • Mentorship is something I value deeply. I wouldn’t be here without them.

Becoming a member signifies a lifetime commitment to upholding a legacy of Black excellence, social action, scholarship, and public service with like-minded women who are dedicated to making the world a better place.

What is the Financial Fortitude Program?

A

Financial Fortitude: is a process that will help program participants to set and define goals, develop a plan to achieve them, and to put the plan into action. The process serves as a blueprint to address all aspects of personal finances.

The Financial Fortitude initiative is comprised of ten components and provides a collaboration of information from major economic corporations and other well-known financial institutions. The ten components include: Goal Setting, Financial Planning, Budgeting, Debt Management, Savings & Investments, Retirement Planning, Homeownership, Insurance, Estate Planning, and Entrepreneurship.

The initiative helps members of the Sorority spread financial education throughout their local communities.

What is Dr. Betty Shabazz Academy:
Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Preparing Young Women for the 21st Century: The Delta Academy Program?

A

Created in 1996 out of an urgent sense that bold action was needed to save our young females (ages 11-14) from the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, and crippled futures. Delta Academy provides an opportunity for local chapters to enrich and enhance the education that our young teens receive in public schools across the nation. Specifically, we augment their scholarship in math, science, and technology, their opportunities to provide service in the form of leadership through service learning defined as the cultivation and maintenance of relationships. A primary goal of the program is to prepare young girls for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century.

What is DELTA GEMS (Growing & Empowering Myself Successfully) — Discovering the Brilliance Program?

A

An extension of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Academy.

Was created to catch the dreams of African-American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a CAN DO attitude. The goals for Delta GEMS are:

  1. To instill the need to excel academically;
  2. To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;
  3. To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures in high school and beyond; and
  4. To create compassionate, caring, and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.

The Delta GEMS program offers a road map for college and career planning through activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth. Delta GEMS, like Delta Academy, is implemented by chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Delta GEMS participants have the opportunity to define and “Discover their individual Brilliance.”

As an organization of predominantly African American women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is uniquely positioned to impact not only the well-being of its membership, but also the families and communities we serve. The DeltaCare initiative is an internal wellness initiative under the programmatic thrust of Physical and Mental Health. It was created to promote self-care through physical wellness, emotional wellness, and awareness/advocacy. Specifically, the Red S.H.O.E. challenge is the physical health component of DeltaCare that encourages members to engage in healthy behaviors. S.H.O.E. is an acronym for Self-care, Healthy Options, and Exercise. === Includes Physical Wellness, Awareness and Advocacy, Emotional Wellness with Self-Care in the Center

What is Project Cherish programming for QuAC?
This national program was created in 1992 for the preservation and beautification of African American landmarks, monuments, and historic sites. The Queens Alumnae Chapter is a proud sponsor of the Lewis H. Latimer House, an African American landmark in the Queens community.

What is Teen Lift programming for QuAC?
Teen Lift was established as a national program in 1966. This program provides educational and travel experiences for participating youth. The goal is to help youth in the Queens community build their sense of pride, self-esteem, commitment in their community and to strive for higher education. Students participate in workshops and community service. Workshops cover life skills topics around health, political, cultural, educational, and economic awareness. Each year, the Queens Alumnae Chapter sponsors tours to Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Entrepreneurship Day - An all-day virtual event with speakers to help aspiring and current business owners navigate the growth and success of their small business. - Speakers will walk through Small Business Administration Business Plans, digital marketing, brand marketing, and much more.

What makes a good candidate for membership?
Members should be dedicated to a lifetime commitment of scholarship, sisterhood, public service and social action. They are leaders in the Black community who aren't afraid to go against the grain to create a better place in the world.

I am a brand marketing consultant with a flexible schedule outside of my existing client calls. If there's an event I am unable to attend, I'll be sure to be a part of the planning process to ensure the event is successful in my absence.

I'd love to gain access to the amazing sisterhood that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has to offer. This will continue to help develop me holistically as a contributor to society to make the world a better place.

I believe I am able to bring my passion for merging Black culture, arts, community, social action, and my love for marketing to the table to continue the existing legacy of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

How are you personally making an impact in the community?
I am making an impact by working with the next generation of leaders through college preparatory and mentorship programming through Strive Survive Succeed and Well Read Sistas. Additionally, I love working with small Black-owned businesses to help them set the foundation they need to be successful in order to reach their business goals.

What are you most passionate about, in terms of the community?
I'm most passionate about the advancement of the Black community. Whether it's mentoring the next leader, helping a business owner with their business plans, or reaching the top charts in music. Seeing positive advancements of our community continues to push me to strive for the next level of achievement.

I will hold myself and my sorority sisters accountable for the mission of the 22 founders by making the world a better place, especially the Black community

It means to service should be the foundation of what you do. It should be a self-less action to help another person out.

What did you do to lead a team project and ensure success?
MoneyLion Commercial shoot with 23XI. Originally we were supposed to have Kurt Busch be the lead in the commercial spots, and he received a concussion on the track the day before the shoot. We pivoted to Bubba Wallace as the lead while rewriting the script to center around Bubba's likeness and working with 23XI to find more star talent, such as Ty Gibbs and Denny Hamlin to join the commercial. This included me pivoting quickly to rearrange schedules with the NASCAR team, empowering the writers and executives, and managing the new expectations of talent and the customers that were featured in the commercial.

What qualities exemplify Sisterhood? Share an example.
I've stepped from the third grade and throughout college. The relationships, I've built with the young ladies of the step team at St. John's University are everlasting and evolving as we've supported, cheered, and cried with one another as we competed in competitions, stayed up late nites for bake sales, and even lending a coat to one person when having to step outside during the winter.
