what is immunology?
study of the body’s defense against infection
highly adaptive (defends against diverse invaders)
observations 2000YA (recovered patients could nurse ill)
how can we generate immunity w/o inducing disease?
vaccination - prepares immune system to eradicate infectious agen before it causes disease
what does immunology involve?
coordinated action between multiple cells, molecules, and tissues over time and space
what can a properly functioning immune system do?
distinguish between self and non-self
distinguishes between dangerous and safe non-self
only mount a response against dangerous non-self
will the immune system mount a response to pathogenic bacteria?
yes
against what would the immune system not mount a response?
self-proteins ex. myelin sheath surrounding neurons
would the immune system mount a response against commensal bacteria?
no because it is non-self but safe
what happens when the immune system breaks down?
disregulated immune response:
respond to safe non-self (case of allergies)
respond to self (autoimmune disorders (ex. ITP, against platelets))
