colonisation = presence of a microbe in the human body without an inflammatory response infection = inflammation due to a microbe

SIRS (old fashioned, not used much)
SOFA = used in ICU
qSOFA = can be used anywhere as a prognostic score
why does hypotension occur in infection?
secondary to vasodilation which occurs due to the inflammation
what is septic shock?
subset of sepsis where circulatory and metabolic dysfunction occurs despite adequate volume resuscitation
