Iron deficiency symptoms
Young leaves are yellow white with green veins (intervening chlorosis).
Older leaves remain green as iron in immobile in plant.
In addition there will be poor growth and leaf loss.
Cause of iron deficiency in plants
pH of above 7 (alkaline) will restrict the ability of the plant to take up iron.
Types of iron may not be suitable; dicotyledonous plants take up Fe2 but only Fe3+ maybe available.
Treatment of deficiency
Add sulphuric to reduce pH.
Add chelates iron and magnesium (such as sequestrine ) around plant roots.
Iron
Rôle in plant
Essential for synthesis of chlorophyll.
