What is the Plot?
it is the sequence of
events in a story or play. The plot is a planned, logical series of events having a beginning,
middle, and end
What is the Setting?
The setting is the time and location where a story takes place. place - geographical location
b) time - historical period, time of day, year, etc
c) weather conditions - Is it rainy, sunny, stormy, etc?
d) social conditions - What is the daily life of the characters like? Does the story contain local
colour (speech, dress, mannerisms, customs, etc. of a particular place)?
e) mood or atmosphere - What feeling is created at the beginning of the story? Is it bright
and cheerful or dark and frightenin
What is a character?
Is the information the author gives about the people in the story.
This can include: a) his/her physical appearance
b) what he/she says, thinks, feels and dreams
c) what he/she does or does not do
d) what others say about him/her and how others react to him
Theme
Is the controlling idea or central insight. It’s the main idea of the story.
What is Point of view
Point of view is the angle from which the story is told. Typically, stories are told
in 1st Person (I, me, we…etc) or 3rd Person (They, she, he…etc
What is conflict?
Conflict moves the plot forward. Every story contains some type of conflict. The main
types are:
1. Man vs. Man – in which 2 characters struggle over some small or large conflict
2. Man vs. Society – in which a man finds him/herself at odds with the majority
3. Man vs. Nature – in which man struggles against the environment
4. Man vs. Himself – in which man struggles with some inner moral dilemma
5. Man vs. Supernatural – in which man struggles against an unearthly or inhuman
force or being (ie., aliens, werewolves, vampires, witches, monsters…etc.)
