- A vessel on a steady course for a considerable time.
- Magnetic change occurs due to vibration.

Where are the soft iron correctors located?
- Horizontal soft iron correctors (Kelvin balls) are located either side of the binnacle.
- Vertical soft iron of the ship is the funnel and this corrected by the flinders bar running vertically on the back of the binnacle.
