water absorbs light, particularly the longer, red to yellow wavelengths, thus depriving chlorophyll a of much of the light energy it would normally absorb
algae compensates for this by possessing accessory photosynthetic pigments that absorb more of the light available underwater
accessory pigments give the seaweed different colours
red accessory pigment phycoerythrin is common in red algae while the golden accessory pigment fucoxanthin is common in browns
