Q

When docking tails, why do we want to cut at least 1 inch away from the base of the tail (what’s the risk of cutting too short?)

16
Q

How are they de-scented as young animals?

A

Castration removes the primary source of testosterone most of the noticeable odor can be eliminated

17
Q

How are they de-scented as adults?

A

They remove the 2 scent glands caudomedial to each horn, this can be done with or without a dehorning.

18
Q

What’s the risk of descenting a breeding buck?

A

Breeding females may reject males that lack this scent.

19
Q

How long should adults and kids and lambs be fasted before surgery?

A

Adults= Withhold food for 12-24 hours
lambs and kids= 2-4 hours
not recommended for neonates

20
Q

Name the 3 nerve blocks given to sheep’s and goats?

A

-L block (Most common)
-Paravertebral block
-Cornual nerve block (goats= dual nerve supply)
-Intravenous regional analgesia (Bier Block)
-Caudal Epidural Analgesia

21
Q

How is castration done in sheep and goats?

A

With a knife or by banding (Emasculator band)
-No anesthetic needed for sheep, cattle, pig and goats.
-Should give tetanus antitoxin and antibiotics.

22
Q

How long does it take for an animals scrotum to fall off after using the elastic ring banding?

A

Scrotum falls off in 10 days – few weeks
● Done on animals under the age of 10
days.

23
Q

What tool do we use to castrate adult males?

A

If older, large animals will use elastrator.

24
Q

Why do we dehorn sheep and goats?

A

-Dairy goats can’t be registered or
shown if they have horns
-Safety of other animals
-Personal cosmetic preference
-Common in goats

25
Who is electric disbudding commonly done for?
Mostly done for kids with small horn buds.
26
What is the goal and aftercare of dehorning?
Goal: Kill the corium of the horn bud completely. Aftercare: antibiotic powder or spray should be applied.
27
Why is it easier and better to dock tails at a young age?
-Less trauma and stress -Less bleeding
28
What's the name for the strong smell goats have? and what's the two spots they originate from?
“Buck odor” -Intact males urinate on themselves -Primary scent glands.
29
What is the odor from the glands used for?
To attract females, rubbing the top of their head on other animals and surfaces help “mark” their territory
