What was the aim?
To investigate of their are gender differences in manners between males and females on public transport
what was the sample?
25 males and 25 females who use public transport in Newcastle city centre
what was the procedure?
- opportunity sample of 25 males and 25 females in the city of Newcastle using public transport
-we created a coding system as a class to Crete standardised ‘good’ and ‘bad’ behaviours on public transport including swearing - conducted a naturalistic covert participant observation of transport users and created a tally go number go good and number of bad behaviours
what were the results?
Females showed 23 more examples of good behaviours compared to males of 12 good manners
What was the conclusion?
Females are more likely to how good behaviours on public transport compared to males
How is it generalisable?
- sample contained males and females- not androcentric or gynocentric - results an be generalised further
OTOH- small sample size of 50, reduces the generalisability
How is It reliable?
- whole class agreed on good and bad manners- can be easily repeated
OTOH- people have different ideas of good and bad manners- reduces reliability
How is it applicable?
-Understand gender differences so that behaviour can be regulated
OTOH- socially sensitive
How is it valid?
no manipulation of variables, high ecological validity
OTOH- some behaviour can be missed
