• President’s home was burned and rebuilt to become the symbolic White House.
• Andrew Jackson became a hero, and then became President due his fame.

• 1819.
• Missouri applied for statehood as a slave state, but a balance between slave states and free states would be disrupted if Missouri were to attain statehood.
• Also the Louisiana Territory would be sort of united in slavery in a way that made the abolitionists uncomfortable.
• Missouri was also sort of an intrusion into the North.

• Produced by Henry Clay.
• To resolve the Missouri Crisis.
• Missouri would join the union as a slave state, but in turn Maine would join as a free state, thereby sustaining the balance of votes in the senate as 12-12.
• Says slavery would be prohibited in all states north of the 36.30; meant Arkansas would get to become slave states, but secured the North.

How did the abolitionists and pro-slavers react to the Missouri Compromise?

• South regarded it as a win because they saw the North as unfit for slavery anyhow bc farming was hard there.
• North says this has demonstrated that Congress may intervene concerning the legality of slavery, which was previously a states only issue.

• Andrew Jackson had gotten full of himself and decided to go to Spanish Florida, occupy several Spanish forts, hang British citizens, and kill Indians.
• President John Quincy Adams had to resolve this, which is the basis for the Trans-Continental Treaty.

Explain the Trans-Continental Treaty.

• Aka Adams-Onís Treaty.
• Florida is ceded to the US, but in exchange the US gives up its claim to Texas.
• Spain further gives up its claim to the Oregon territory.

Why was the Trans-Continental Treaty possible?

• Spain was a declining power, and Adams’ diplomatic skill allowed him to make ample use of an event that would have otherwise led to war.

Monroe Doctrine.

• Basically asserts that no European powers can interfere with independent nations in the Americas/Western Hemisphere.
• However the US asserts that it will state out of European affairs.
• Preceded by Latin American independence movements, and a response to the encroachment of Russia on Americas in terms of claims.
• US had no power to enforce this.

US Presidential election 1824.

• 4 competing candidates: Andrew Jackson from Tennessee, John Quincy Adams from Mass., William Crawford from Georgia, and Henry Clay from Kentucky.
• No one got a majority in the electoral college so it came upon the House.
• Henry Clay was the speaker of the House, and used his influence to get John Quincey Adams elected, which destroyed Clay’s reputation and crippled Adams’ Presidency, as people argued it was a “corrupt bargain.”
