1
Q

How to form square planar crystal field

A

.Start from octahedral and remove ligands on the z axis
.Ligands on z axis=further away all orbitals with a z component lower in energy further away so less repulsion
.mantain energy dx2-y2 and dxy increase in energy
.ligands on z axes removed dz2 drops energy so stabilized
.dx2- y2 high in energy as ligands directly pointed at all lobes

Q

How to determine if it’s high or low spin

A

.If change in o greater than p (strong field) and low spin
.if change in o less than p(weak field) and high spin

Q

What is delta o influenced by r

A

Charge on metal- higher charge greater electrostatic interactions larger delta o
.ligands.
.nature of metal-delta o larger for 2nd and 3rd row metals and less pairing energy

Q

Examples of strong and weak field ligands

A

Strong field ligand=CN- ,CO,NH3,H2O
Weak field-Br- ,F-,SCN-
