   -Animal studies before testing on humans
2. Phase 1 clinical trial
   -Test if drug is safe for humans using a small group of people
3. Phase 2 clinical trial
   -Test if the drug works for intended purpose (effectiveness)
   -Uses a larger group of people (100s), tests safety, figures out dosage
4. Phase 3 Clinical Trial
   -How does drug compare with available treatments?
   -uses larger group (1000s)
5. After approval
   -Ongoing assessment of long term use, benefits and risks
