- Establishing design requirements and conduction requirements analysis, sometimes termed problem definition - effectively what problem are you trying to solve and how do you plant to solve it?
- there are two sets of design requirements: customer and internal requirements
- the 3 types if statements in a requirements documents are:
1. Shall - This must be implemented
2. Will - This will state a fact or declaration of purpose for the design
3. Should - these are non-mandatory, typically define something to optimize

- achievable idea

What is the conceptual design step, and what methods can be used to do it?
- this step is done to minimize the likelihood of error, manage costs, assess risks, and evaluate the potential success of the intended project
- this can be done with a weighted trade study
What is the preliminary design step?
The overall system configurations are defending, and schematics, diagrams and layouts of the project may provide early project configuration
What is the detailed design step?
Cad programs can be used to make drafts and simulate design allowing potential design issues to be addressed before prototyping.
What is the verification and validation testing step?
Verification: checks that a product, service or system meets specifications.
Validation: intended to check if the operational needs of the user are met.
What is the production planning step?
involves selecting the production process, determining the sequence of operations, and the selection of tools, fixtures, metal cutting and metal or plastics forming tools
During the project economics step, what factors must be accounted for(3)?
- cost (software, materials, upfront costs, operating costs)

What is upfront and variable cost?
upfront: cost to get the product to production
variable: cost to to continue making the product
What are the 5 steps of doing a weighted trade study?
- Assign weights to every design requirement
- Have all team members give the design a score for each requirement
- average the score to have a single score represent each requirement
- The weight is multiplied by the average score resulting in a weighted average score for each requirement.
- These weighted scores are then summed for each design giving each design a numerical value to show how good each design is.
What are the 6 C’s of decision making?
