Sphingolipids
all contain a long-chain nitrogen-containing alcohol named sphingosine
Ceramides
Ceramides have a fatty acyl group linked to the primary amino group of sphingosine and can be regarded as the basic building block of more complex sphingolipids.
sphingomyelin
ceramide is esterified to a phosphocholine or phosphoethanolamine head group
cerebrosides
ceramide forms a glycosidic bond with either glucose or galactose;
gangliosides
oligosaccharides containing one or more N-acetylneuraminic acid groups form the ceramide head group.
Cerebrosides and gangliosides are
glycosphingolipids.
sphingomyelin
phosphocholine bound to ceramide
