Lipids
Nonpolar hydrophobic molecules
Ex: fats, waxes, oils, and some vitamins
Lipids are used to form
Fats and phospholipids
Fats
Made of glycerol backbone attached to fatty acid
Triglyceride
3 FA on 1 glycerol; fat
Fatty acids
Differ in structure and can form saturated or unsaturated fats
Unsaturated fats
Double-bonds in fatty acid which liquified at room temperature with a lower melting point (plant oils & oils)
Saturated fats
No double bonds in fatty acid which are solid at room temperature (with a higher melting point (animal fats & fats)
Phospholipids
Phospholipid bilayer
2 layers of phospholipids that makes up the cell membrane
