Antagonist
the character or force who struggles against the hero and tries to bring him down e.g. “the bad guy”.
ex: Jafar from Aladdin is an antagonist because he doesn’t want to lose his power.
Antecedent
The word, phrase, or clause referred to by a pronoun. occasionally, you may be asked for the antecedent of a given pronoun in a long, complex sentence or in a group of sentences.
ex: In a sentence that’s really long, the antecedent would be replaced with a pronoun later. It is now the subject because the antecedent was introduced already,
Antithesis
A figure of speech (often in rhetorical writing) in which contrasting or paradoxical ideas are presented in a parallel form. Example of sentence:
All I know is love is all i know. (Emily Dickenson)

Aphorism
A terse statement of known authorship which expresses a general truth or a moral principle( if the authorship is unknown, the statement is generally considered to be a folk proverb). An aphorism can be a memorable summation of the author’s point.
Apostrophe
A figure of speech that directly addresses an absent or imaginary character or a personified abstraction, such as liberty or love. The effect may add familiarity or emotional intensity. ex: William Wordsworth addresses John Milton as he writes, “Milton, thou shouldst be living at this hour: England has need of thee.”
