Hydrostatic pressure
When fluids transmit pressure perfectly.
The pressure exerted by a column of fluid is dependent only on the height of the fluid column and its density.
Normal pressure vs. Overpressure vs. Lithostatic pressure
Normal: Hydrostatic pressure, it is due only ot the weight of the fluid column above the formation
Over: Any pressure above the hydrostatic (or normal) for a particular depth.
Lithos: lithostatic gradient, empirical max, where is the probable maximum pressure likely to be encountered in a well at any depth
Formation temperatures pr. km?
Typical gradients for sedimentary basins are between 20°C per km and 35°C per km
Geophysical Well Log
Continuous recording of a geophysical parameter along a borehole
What material can you get from boreholes?
Cutting from drill hole: Biostragigraphy can be done
Certain drills are in a circle and can create cores
(Pushing at sides to get intact sediments)
