-Lady Caroline Lamb said he was “mad, bad and dangerous to know” - he was known for being rebellious/having radical beliefs - his hedonistic lifestyle
-died of a fever in the the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire
-not very interested in societal problems etc - “I only go out to get me a fresh appetite for being alone”
-had lots of affairs and even rumoured to have been with his own sister
Carpe Diem and Momento Mori
Carpe Diem = a latin phrase which means ‘seize the day’
Momento Mori = another latin phrase which means ‘remember you must die’
- both are mottos which Byron lived by and spoke continually about in his poems
Greek war of Independence
-1823 he was invited to join the struggle against the Ottoman Empire
-spent a lot of his own personal fortune on repairing ships/own military squad because he wanted to ensure his money would be used for the liberation of the nation and not political purposes (there were controversies arising between the leaders of the Greek rebels)
-He fell ill in 1824 and died a few months later
