Define Buffer
A solution that resists pH changes, even when acid or base is added to it.
How are Buffers made?
Mixing a weak acid with a salt containing its conjugate base, or a weak base with a salt containing its conjugate acid
Define Buffer Capacity
The amount of acid or base that can be added before considerable pH change occurs.
How do Buffers resist pH change?
Adding acid/base causes a Le Chatelier shift due to the Common Ion Effect.
This brings the H3O+ or OH1- concentrations back to previous levels.
