What is lymph and what does it do?
Lymph is colorless fluid that drains from tissues. It transports excess fluid, nutrients, cell debris, toxins, pathogens, and immune cells (especially lymphocytes) back toward the bloodstream for filtering and immune defense.
What are the main lymphatic structures?
Lymphatic capillaries and vessels (drain and transport lymph), lymph nodes (filter lymph), lymphatic organs (tonsils, spleen, thymus), and collecting ducts (right lymphatic duct and thoracic duct returning lymph to veins).
What do lymph nodes do and where are they located?
They filter lymph and house immune cells. Key locations: armpits, elbows, neck, groin, behind knees.
How does movement help lymph flow?
Muscle contractions push lymph through vessels since there’s no central pump. Immobility can cause swelling.
What are common lymphatic disorders relevant to nail techs?
Lymphedema (swelling), lymphadenitis (inflamed nodes), lymphangitis (red streaks) — may require service modification or referral.
