What are the conditions for natural selection?
What is fitness?
The ability to survive and produce viable offspring
What is stabilizing selection?
Favors intermediate phenotypes (mean doesn’t change)
What is direction selection?
Favors one extreme phenotype (mean changes but variance doesn’t)
What is disruptive selection?
Favors both extreme phenotypes (mean and variance don’t change)
What is frequency dependent selection?
The fitness of a phenotype changes with its commonality
(positive, increases as it becomes common; negative, decreases as it becomes common)
What is sexual selection?
Favoring males who produce certain characteristics so that females find them attractive (or traits that allow them to compete with men) and mate
