Q

Annex IV Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Sewage from Ships

A

Contains requirements to control pollution of the sea by sewage;
The discharge of sewage into the sea is prohibited, except:
-when the ship has in operation an approved sewage treatment plant
- when the ship is discharging comminuted and disinfected sewage using an approved system at a distance of more than three nautical miles from the nearest land;
-sewage which is not comminuted or disinfected has to be discharged at a distance of more than 12 nautical miles from the nearest land.

Q

Annex V Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Garbage from Ships

A

Deals with different types of garbage and specifies the distances from land and the manner in which they may be disposed of; the most important feature of the Annex is the complete ban imposed on the disposal into the sea of all forms of plastics.

Q

Annex VI Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships

A

Sets limits on sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from ship exhausts and prohibits deliberate emissions of ozone depleting substances; designated emission control areas set more stringent standards for SOx, NOx and particulate matter. A chapter adopted in 2011 covers mandatory technical and operational energy efficiency measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

who needs it?
what is it?

A

requirement applies to all ships -100GT and above or carrying 15 or more persons

designated person in charge of carrying out the plan

sets of procedures for minimising, collecting, storing, processing and disposing of garbage.

16
Q

What is the IEAPPC?

A

International Energy Efficiency Certificate
- Confirms compliance with energy efficiency regulations
- Covers EEDI and SEEMP requirements
- Issued by Flag State or RO
- Required for ships ≥400 GT

17
Q

What is SEEMP?

A

Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan
- Document onboard explaining how the ship improves fuel efficiency
- Includes speed optimisation, voyage planning and maintenance
- Mandatory under MARPOL Annex VI
- Applies to ships ≥400 GT

18
Q

What is NOx under MARPOL Annex VI?

A

Nitrogen Oxides
- Produced by engine combustion
- Controlled by engine design standards (Tier I, II, III)
- Applies to engines >130 kW
- Stricter limits in NOx ECAs

19
Q

What is SOx under MARPOL Annex VI?

A

Sulphur Oxides
- Produced from sulphur in fuel oil
- Controlled by fuel sulphur limits or scrubbers
- Major contributor to air pollution
- Regulated globally and in ECAs

20
Q

What is the global fuel sulphur limit?

A

0.5% sulphur
- Applies worldwide outside ECAs
- In force since 1 January 2020
- Reduces SOx emissions globally

21
Q

What is the fuel sulphur limit in ECAs?

A

0.1% sulphur
- Applies only within ECAs
- Much stricter than global limit
- Reduces local air pollution

22
Q

What is an ECA?

A

Emission Control Area
- Sea area with stricter air pollution controls
- 0.1% sulphur fuel limit
- NOx Tier III for new engines
- Examples: Baltic Sea, North Sea, North America, US Caribbean

23
Q

Which MARPOL Annex covers air pollution?

A

Annex VI
- Controls SOx, NOx and other air emissions
- Introduces fuel limits and ECAs
- Covers energy efficiency requirements
