Associative property
The grouping changes, but the order doesn’t.
Commutative property
The order of the numbers changes.
Indentity property
Any number plus zero = itself
Any number times 1 = itself
Inverse property
Any number plus its opposite = 0
Any number times its reciprocal = 0
Multiplicative property of zero
Any number times zero equals zero
Distributive property
The number outside of the parentheses is “passed out” or multiplied by each term inside the parentheses.
APOE
An equation stays in balance if you add the same number to both sides of the equal sign.
SPOE
An equation stays in balance if you subtract the same number to both sides of the equal sign.
MPOE
An equation stays in balance if you multiply the same number to both sides of the equal sign.
DPOE
An equation stays in balance if you divide the same number to both sides of the equal sign.
Substitution property
If values are equal, then one value may be substituted for the other.
Transative property
If two numbers (x and y) are equal to each other and x is equal to z, then y is also equal to z.
Reflexive property
Any value is equal to itself.
Symmetric property
If one value is equal to another, then the order around the equal sign can change.
