MBSS contrast
Barium or visipaque
MBSS anatomy
Nasopharynx = from skull base to soft palate; respiratory function only
Oropharynx = from soft palate to hyoid bone; anterior border is the base of the tongue
[ Valleculae ] : 2 symmetric pouches formed in the recess between the base of the tongue and epiglottis
Hypopharynx/Laryngopharynx = from hyoid bone to the cricopharyngeus muscle
Epiglottis and aryepiglottic folds separate larynx from OP and HP
[ Piriform sinuses ] : deep, symmetric lateral recesses formed by the protrusion of the larynx into the hypopharynx
MBSS complimentary imaging techniques
MR (better than CT) to evaluate nasopharynx
