What are the 3 separate areas of tidal zones, and what are there physical features?
Subtidal zone: fully submerged with low tide (Bull kelp, Brown algae)
Intertidal zone: exposed with low tide, flooded with high tide (Starfish, algae, Gastropods)
Spray zone: only sprayed with sea water from winds or extreme high tide, mainly sand (Barnacles)
How have some marine life adapted to being exposed directly to air out of the water?
G.caespitosa: having a sealing lid
H.banksii: Hold fast disks to stop moving with tide. Use rising tides as a means in reproduction. Fluid filled bladders to prevent drying out.
What are spring tides?
Extreme low tide and extreme high tide
Caused by the sun and moon alignment (full moon, new moon)
How does the growth rate of Catomerus (Barnacle) vary with increasing height above sea level?
Growth rate decreases due to lack of water
Example of three types of organisms in the intertidal zone
Sea grapes (Hormosira banksii)
The marine worm (Galeolaria)
Grazers
How have plants adapted to anaerobic soils (waterlogged)?
Developing larger intercellular air spaces to increase gas exchange
What are the difference between a sclerophyll and a mesophyte?
Sclerophylls have firm rigid leaves grow in dryer areas. Where as mesophytes have softer larger leaves and grow in wetter areas
What is a benefit to having hanging leaves compared to horizontal leaves?
Reduces heat absorption, but also reduces effectiveness of photosynthesis.
What is the function of a follicle on plants
It is a thick woody fruit that protects the seed from fires, then opens after a fire as gone through
What is the function of the hypodermis in a sclerophyll?
Protective layer of resin that prevents excessive heat and light damaging the Chloroplasts.
Sits between the epidermis and the palisade mesophyll
What is the function of cladodes on cylindrical shaped leaves
They are the photosynthetic organ in the leaf
