Recognizing differences in men’s and women’s experiences – acknowledge that social mainstream theories ignore womens experiences – SW must understand how social structures oppress women
Taking an inclusive stance- requires SW to challenge narrow assumption, and respect and affirm experiences and values of clients from divese communities

Genetic factors- it is believed that some mental health problems occure more often in families that have a lot of history of mental illness
Biological factors- age and gender as an example affect the rate and prevalence of mental illness especially when combined with other factors
Environmental factors- stresses due to finances relationships, family background, and lack of access to health care and social supports
Physical factors symptoms of mental illness can occur in people with physical illness – for example someone with a physical illness may experience severe depression
