Common rafter layout procedure

1. draw plumb line using framing square at one end for ridge
2. mark half ridge beam in from end perpendicular to plumb line
3. calculate line length of rafter from first plumb line (not subtracting .5 ridge)
4. mark birds mouth plumb line
5. mark seat cut (2-4”) (not longer then wall pate is wide)
6. calculate tail length
7. measure+mark tail along top edge of rafter.
8. mark plumb line for fascia cut same angle as others
9. mark soffit cut back towards birds mouth(make sure to leave sufficient length to attach fascia)
10. cut rafter. use as template.
