Grasping object
• if you put an object in front of the child → they will reach out for it & they may be able to hold onto it
by 2 - 3 months old
- child is born with this – should go away by 6 months old
- if you stroke or rest an object on the inside of their hand / on their palm → they will automatically grasp it with their hand
Palmar grasp
Transfer object
• they can transfer, move objects from their one hand to their other hand
by 7 months old
Pincer grasp
• they use their thumb & index finger to pick up small things
• ex: they pick up one cheerio at a time & put it in their mouth; the pick up single pieces of spaghetti
by 9 months old
Remove object
• they can open bins - so they can get their toys out of it; can remove objects from containers
• by 11 months old
Build tower
• stacking towers of blocks

Partial head control

they have (head-to-toe control = Cephalocaudal) :

◦ when you put child in a prone position → they will start to roll over
6 months
in sitting position:
◦ they’re pushing up & trying to sit on their own, or
◦ they will lean against an object in order to sit up – theyre not falling over anymore

◦ they can independently get themselves in a sitting position
◦ they can sit by themselves & hold onto objects – they can transfer objects from one hand to the other hand while sitting
8 months old
Locomotion

- they no longer want to be on the floor
- so the parent reaches out to them & they go in a standing position → they will try to take some steps
- they will hold onto things so that they can bring themselves up to a standing position → and will take steps by themselves (they start cruising)
- after cruising → comes walking independently
10 months old

Object Permanence =
• Object Permanence = even though they can’t see the object, they know that its there
◦ they will go looking for it
• children learn Self-Image
◦ ex: if you put them in front of the mirror = they may scream b/c they dont know who’s in the mirror staring at them; or they will start talking to their reflection in the mirror

- Vocalizations = theyre making sounds – cooing, gurgling
* theyre trying to communicate with you by making sounds

- Comprehend “No” - they can understand what ‘no’ means
* follow commands at 9 to 10 months
9 months old
• they can start vocalizing – they will have a very small vocabulary, but they can understand a lot
◦ they will use 1-syllable words = ex: hi, no, bye, ma, da
• Three to five words with meaning by age 1
12 months / 1 year old:
- is a normal, healthy behavior
- indicates that the child had a good relationship with the parents
- starts at 6-8 months old
- peaks at 10-18 months old
