• Regulating hormones from the hypothalamus (such as gonadotrophin releasing hormone, GnRH) stimulate the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH) by the anterior pituitary gland.
• GnRH travels down the pituitary stalk from the hypothalamus to the anterior pituitary. The anterior pituitary is richly supplied by blood vessels and the release of FSH and LH into this plexus of blood vessels transports the hormones into the general circulation and then to the ovaries. This results in the maturation of oocytes each month, and release of one from the ovary (ovulation).
