lesion in the upper most neurons = flaccid/spastic

muscle rigidity might best be described as a symptom of lesion in/dysfunction with the basal ganglia/cerebellar pathways affecting the opposite side of the body. Without UMN input, ie spastic paralysis, one might still expect muscle rigidity due to the overexcited flexor/extensor reflexes.
