1. the source device sends a request to send (RTS) message to the access point
2. if the channel is not being used then the AP sends the source device a clear to send (CTS) message.
3. a CTS message is then broadcast to all the other devices so they know the channel is in use
4. when the source device has finished sending its messages it sends an acknowledgement message to the AP. this ACK message tells the AP that the channel can be freed
5. the AP then broadcasts an ACK message to all other hosts on the WLAN letting them know the channel will be freed
6. the AP then frees the channel
