A

Fluency is the ability to read text at an appropriate rate, with accuracy, expression, and appropriate phrasing, and without significant word-recognition difficulties. If a reader is considered fluent, reading involves minimal effort.

Fluency begins to develop in early readers by accurate and automatic letter naming. The most advanced level of fluency is the ability to read complex academic texts with accuracy and automaticity.

automaticity and prosody

A

automaticity- effortless word identification, or being able to look at words and read them aloud without thinking

prosody- the defining feature of expressive reading, which comprises all of the variables of timing, phrasing, emphasis, and intonation (a way to look at this is “pros” means forward so if a child is reading with prosody, their reading has moved forward).

A

decoding issues- Children who are not able to break words into syllables, connect the letter to its sound, and correctly pronounce the word struggle with fluency. They “get stuck” when trying to sound out words or say that reading is just too hard.

Auditory disorders refer to the skills related to how the brain distinguishes and translates information that the student hears. Students might hear the words but have trouble processing the information. Phonological processing refers to how the brain processes speech sounds. Children have problems pronouncing developmentally appropriate words correctly.

Language processing disorder is not being able to retrieve common words, misusing words that have similar sounds, and not being able to complete a sentence or thought.
