Relapse remitting
Relapses with full recovery (or a few remaining neurological symptoms), with residual deficit during recovery periods between relapses
Primary progressive
disease progression from onset. Generally, has no plateaus or remissions, or has occasional plateaus along with temporary minor movements
Secondary progressive
initial relapsing-remitting course, then progression at different rates that could include some relapses and minor remissions
Progressive relapsing
progressive disease from onset but no clear acute relapses. Might have some recovery or remission. Seen in individuals who develop disease after 40 years old
