What is liberal multiculturalism?
a broad ideology that endorses cultural diversity, compatible with tolerance and personal autonomy within a liberal framework, and promotes civic unity in the public sphere
What is pluralist multiculturalism ?
diversity is a value in its own right, all cultures are equal and cultural recognition is the basis for civic participation
What is cosmopolitan multiculturalism?
diversity strengthens cultural hybridity, promoting global citizenship and undermining cultural identity as a driving force in society
What is the Conservative critism of multiculturalism?
there can be no diversity within unity.

Define Individualist integration
Institutional adjustments for migrants or minorities as those of individual claimants and bearers of rights as equal citizens.
Define Multicultural integration.
The processes of integration are seen as two way, different for different groups and individuals, to create a new national identity, where all citizens have not just rights but a sense of belonging to the whole, as well as to their own group identity/identities.
Define Assimilation.
The processes affecting change and the relationship between social groups are one way, with minorities adopting the values, customs and beliefs of the majority.
Define Segregation
Multiculturalism has led to ethnic and religious groups becoming increasingly separated.
Define Cosmopolitan intergation
The maximum freedom for minority, as well as majority, individuals, to mix with, borrow and learn from all cultures.
Define Value pluralism.
There is no one absolute conception of the ‘good life’ but rather multiple, competing and equally legitimate conceptions.
Define Group differentiated rights
Rights that belong to a group, in contrast to a right held by individuals, includes self-government rights, polyethnic rights andrepresentation rights.
Define Universalism
From a multiculturalist view, universalism is where certain values are applicable to all individuals and all societies, regardless of culture, history, geography or any other differences.
