LONG EXPLANATION: Why was NATO formed?
Deter soviet expansionism
Forbid nationalist militarism
Encourage European integreaton
The creation of NATO was sparked by several factors following World War II:
Soviet Expansionism: The USSR installed communist regimes across Eastern Europe, threatening Western European sovereignty.
The Berlin Blockade: Stalin’s 1948 attempt to cut off West Berlin by land served as the most immediate and tangible demonstration of aggressive Soviet intent.
European Military Weakness: Post-war Western European nations were too weak to defend themselves without external assistance.
Need for a US Commitment: European leaders required a formal treaty guaranteeing that the US would commit to their defence in peacetime.
Failure of the UN Security Council: The Soviet Union’s veto power in the UN made the organisation ineffective in addressing Soviet aggression, leading Western nations to seek a separate security arrangement.
