21
Q

While the officials are on the way to the locker room for halftime, they are notified by an assistant coach for Team A that their player A33 was not awarded merited free throws from a common foul at:
a. The 1:33 mark of the 1st quarter
b. The 10:37 mark of the 2nd quarter
Handle the situations:

A

a) It is too late to correct this error. Correctable errors that occur in the first and third periods must be corrected before the start of the next period.
b) The officials shall check play-by-play and if Team A scored or was awarded free throws on the ensuing possession the error shall be ignored. If not, A33 will attempt two free throws prior to the start of the 3rd period.
(RULE 2, SECTION VI (A)(1 and 3)) (Casebook #78)

22
Q

With 3:58 remaining in the 3rd quarter, A2 is shooting a free throw that will remain in play. He misses the attempt and Team B gets the rebound. B1 gets fouled by A1 on a successful 3pt attempt at the 3:47 mark. During the ensuing dead ball, A3 physically taunts B3. It is then discovered that Team B has 6 players on the floor. Handle the situation.

A

Non-unsportsmanlike technical foul assessed to Team B. We will not shoot any free throws because of the technical foul against A3. The coach for Team A can choose to return to the point of interruption (B1’s merited free throw) or nullify all play that occurred with 6 Team B players on the floor. The game clock would be reset to 3:58, the successful three point shot by B1 would be nullified, the personal foul against A1 would be nullified, but the technical foul against A3 would remain. Since A2’s free throw was unsuccessful, play would resume with a jump ball in the center circle between any two players in the game at the time of the error. (RULE 12A, SECTION III (A)(1 and 2))

23
Q

With 43.8 seconds remaining in OT, and 13 seconds on the shot clock, A2 has the ball in his frontcourt. The ball is deflected by B1 into the backcourt. May Team A call timeout to advance the ball if:
a. A2 retrieves the loose ball in the backcourt?
b. The ball goes out of bounds with 40.8 seconds remaining on the game clock?

A

a) The deflection by B1 does not constitute new possession, so they may not advance the ball unless they utilize a second timeout.
b) Yes, they may advance the ball because the ball is out of bounds in the backcourt.
(RULE 5, SECTION VI (G)) (Casebook #295)

24
Q

A6 replaces A1, on the ensuing throw-in A3 throws the ball and it is kicked by B1. Prior to the ball being at the disposal of A3, Team A’s head coach wishes to substitute A7 in for A6. The officials allow this since there was a violation committed by the defense. Are they correct?

A

No, the officials are not correct. A6 must stay in the game until the ball is legally touched, unless a personal or technical foul is called, there is a change of possession, a timeout is granted, or administration of infection control rule. (RULE 3, SECTION V (E))

25
B1 steals the ball from A1. Before he has the opportunity to advance the ball, A1 dives and grabs B1's legs pulling him to the ground. At replay, the officials determine the contact to be unnecessary. B1 is injured on the play and unable to attempt free throws. Handle the situation.
On the floor this would be ruled a transition take foul against A1. After replay, it would be upgraded to a Flagrant Foul Penalty 1. Any of the remaining 4 players that were in the game at the time of the foul can attempt the two free throws, then it would be Team B's ball at the FTLE with 24 seconds on the shot clock. B1 can remain in the game since he was not required to attempt the free throws. (RULE 9, SECTION II (A)(6))
