Anton Raphael Mengs, Johann Joachim Winckelmann, c.1777
MET
German literary scholar, 1755 published a phamplet in which he pointed to Classical sculpture as a way to improve contemporary painting and sculpture along with society as a whole.
While Classical sculpture were idealized, Winckelmann believed they were true representations of the ancient Greeks.
The Greeks, he said, lived simply, ate healthy, and exercised regularly.
