1
Q

What are Neurons?

A

Cells of the nervous system

Carries information as electrical impulses

Between neurons is the synapse

Neurons communicate through synaptic transmission at the synapse

Receive information from other neurons

Sends this information towards the soma

Q

What is the Axon?

A

Carries electrical impulses away from the soma towards to the axon terminals and synapses

Q

What is the Myelin Sheath?

A

Fatty layer that forms around the axons

Protects the axons

Allows messages to be transmitted across the nerve cells

Helps speed up the electrical impulses

Q

What is the Synapse?

A

Gaps between neurons

Synaptic transmission occurs at the synapse

Enables 1 neuron to transmit a signal to another neuron

Synaptic vesicles

Q

What is the 5 Step Process of Synaptic Transmission?

A
  1. Electrical impulse arrives at the axon terminal
  2. Vesicles releases the neurotransmitter into the synapse
  3. Neurotransmitters move across the synapse
  4. Neurotransmitters bind to the receptor sites on the next neuron
  5. The electrical impulse continues in the next neuron
