• Local Area Network
• A building or group of buildings which have high speed connectivity which are connected together e.g at an office or work environment or at home
• Connection can be over Ethernet or 802.11 Wireless

What is a WAN?

• Wide Area Network
  
  • Spanning the globe( Aka the Internet connection)
• Generally connects multiple LANs across a distance and generally much slower than a LAN
• Many different WAN technologies including point to point serial, MPLS etc includes terrestrial and non terrestrial

Personal Area Network
- Your own private network such as Bluetooth, IR or NFCCX
E.G - automobile audio output which integrates phone
Mobile phone wireless headset uses bluetooth
- Or health monitoring equiptment

Metropolitan Area Network

• a network in your city
• Larger than a LAN, often smaller than a WAN
• Historically MAN-specific topologies, Everyone’s moving to Metro Ethernet
• usually run by a local government and owned by them

Wireless Mesh Network

• Commonly used in the phone where all devices connect together( similar to peer to peer)
• a mesh cloud e.g The Internet Of Things( Zigbee)
• Self form and connect together forming a network
• Self heal reacts automatically to changes.
• Many different technologies including 802.11, Zigbee, Z wave etc

How are cable internet connections made?

• Connection is made via an RG-6 cable( Coaxial) cable being run into the office or home and connected to the modem/ SOHO router by way of a screw on F-connector.
• The Cable modem is equipped with an RJ45 connector for patching to the router or to individuals computers on the network
