Draw:
A Maxwell - Boltzmann Distrubution Curve
Refer to notes for answer:
Y-axis - number of particles
X-axis - Energy
Peak of curve - Most Probable energy
Average energy - 1/2 area
Activation energy - particles above are reacting
Aymptote at the end
Explain how increasing concentration of a substance affects the rate of reaction
Increase in concentration increases the number of particles per unit volume. There are more frequent succesful collisions and so the rate of reaction is faster.
Explain how increasing surface area affects the rate of reaction
Increased surface area means there is a higher area for particles to collide. There are more frequent succesful collision, and so the rate of reaction increases.
Explain how an increase in temperature affects the rate of reaction
Increasing temperature means there is more kinetic energy so the particles move faster. There are more frequent succesful collisions with the minimum activation energy and so there is an increased rate of reaction.
Explain how the addition of a catalyst affects the rate of reaction.
A catalyst provides an alternate route with a lower activation energy. This means there are more frequent succesful collisions, and a faster rate of reaction occurs.
