Participant
The researcher becomes a part of the group or environment:
- to gain a deeper understanding of behaviours and interactions
Non-participant
The researcher observes a group or individuals without taking part:
- maintain objectivity
- avoid influencing behaviour being studied
Naturalistic
A psychologist observes and record behaviour in its natural environment.
No manipulation or control over the situation
Structured
A researcher systematically observes and records specific, predefined behaviours within a defined set of CRITERIA.
Quantitative data
Overt
Participants are aware they are being observed and may even be informed of the study’s aim beforehand.
Covert
Participants are unaware they are being observed.
