Definition of obstructive shock?
Blood cannot reach tissues due to obstruction.
Causes of obstructive shock?
Pulmonary embolism, pneumothorax, hemothorax, cardiac tamponade.
What is cardiac tamponade?
Fluid buildup in pericardial sac impairing heart contraction.
Sequence of tamponade events?
Fluid compresses heart
Chambers cannot expand
Blood backs up systemically
Lungs receive inadequate blood
Body receives inadequate blood
What causes pulmonary embolism?
Foreign body blocking pulmonary artery.
Most pulmonary emboli originate from?
DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) in lower leg.
Other emboli origins?
Pelvis, kidneys, arms, right heart chambers.
Why does PE cause shock?
Increased Right ventricle pressure → septum shift → decreased Left ventricle preload → hypotension.
