Successes of ICZM
A
- 45,000 fisher folks from 7510 families have been given financial support
- supports 600 self help groups in 80 fishing villages
- communities trained in planting mangroves and protecting them, 200 hectares has already been planted
- mangroves stabilise coastal environments and protect species such as crabs and fishes, they are cheap, cost effective and advance the line
- mangroves allow for growth of medicinal plants and commercial plants which can be sold for an income

Risks vs Rewards of management
A
Risks:
- rates of erosion have increased through natural processes and human intervention
- 36.8% of coastline is eroding
- due to dense mangrove vegetation some areas experience levels of accretion 50% higher than elsewhere
- shoreline change is extremely dynamic
Rewards:
- 35% of coastline is laden with sediment minerals and heavy metal deposits
- there are opportunities for offshore oil, natural gas and seabed mining
- many people employed in fishing which would be affected
- tourism is important with wildlife sanctions being attractive
