1
Q

Competent Person (In relation to Enclosed Space)

A

Q

Enclosed Space

A

An enclosed space is one that:
-Is not designed for continuous worker occupancy.
-With limited openings for entry and exit.
-With inadequite ventilation.

Example - Duct keel/DB tanks/Battery locker/

Q

Risk

A

Risk is the product of 2 elements.
-The likelihood that harm or danger may occur.
-The potential severity of the harm or damage.
Based on the above, the risk of an injury or harm from doing a task/encountering a hazard may be found to be low, medium, high or very high.

Risk= Probability X Severity

Q

Authorised Officer (In relation to enclosed space)

A

An Authorised Officer is a person authorised to permit entry into an enclosed space and with sufficient knowledge of control and elimination of hazard and of the procedures to be established and complued with on board, to be able to ensure that the space is safe for entry.

Working At Height

A

Anyone working in a location where there is a risk of falling may be regarded as working at height. In addition to work on ladders, staging and scaffolding, this includes undertaking work inside a tank, near an opening such as a hatch, or on a fixed stairway.

Q

Adjacent Connected Space

A

An adjacent connected space means:
-A normally unventilated space,
-Which is not used for cargo,
-But which may share the same atmospheric characteristics with the enclosed space.

Example - Cargo Space Accessway.

Q

Hazard

A

A hazard is a source of potential injury, harm or damage. It may come from many sources, such as situations, the environment or a human element.

Example - Slips, trips and falls.

Q

Attendant (In relation to enclosed Space)

A

An attendant is a person who is suitably trained within the safety manegement system (SMS), maintains a watch over those entering the enclosed space, maintains communications with those inside the space and initiates the emergency procedures in the event of an incident occuring.

Q

Observation

A

a statement of fact made during a safety management audit and substantiated by objective evidence.

17
Q

Non-Conformity

A

an observed situation where objective evidence indicates the non-fulfilment of a specified requirement

18
Q

Major non-conformity

A

an identifiable deviation that poses a serious threat to the safety of personnel or the ship or a serious risk to the environment that requires immediate corrective action or the lack of effective and systematic implementation of a requirement of this Code.

19
Q

Explain the term ‘Emission Control Area’

A

An Emission Control Area (ECA) is a designated sea area where much stricter controls are placed on ship emissions to protect the environment and public health.
