Testing for alkenes
1) add bromine water = orange -> colourless
2) add potassium manganate = purple -> colourless (forms a diol)
Testing for haloalkane type
1) Add aqueous sodium hydroxide solution
2) Nitric acid added
3) Add silver nitrate and observe colour change as usual
Testing for alcohols
Adding acidified potassium dichromate will show a colour change from orange -> green in primary and secondary alcohols. No change in tertiary alcohols. Or using acidified potassium manganate will show purple -> colourless colour change
Carboxylic acid test
Add sodium carbonate, causes fizzing of carbon dioxide gas
