Fistulas
A
- Palatal fistula can be found anywhere in the hard palate or velum but always along the embryological or surgical suture lines.
- Most common is at junction of hard and soft palate.
- Small fistula may become systematic during palatal expansion.

A
- Also known as labial fistula or nasolabial fistula
* Not really a fistula unless problems after bone graft

Dentition and Occlusion
A
• Have patient bite down on “back teeth”
• Evaluating skeletal relationship between the maxilla and mandible and position of teeth
• Primary dentition- 1-6 years- baby teeth • Mixed dentition – 6-12 years-baby and
adult teeth
• Permanent teeth/secondary –adult teeth

Maloclussions
A
- Crossbite – maxillary teeth are inside the mandibular teeth
- anteriorcrossbite • posterior crossbite
- Open bite – maxillary teeth do not overlap the mandibular teeth – see with thumb/finger suckers/pacifier users and tongue thrust

3 Skeletal Relationships of Occlusion
A
- Class I-normal occlusion- the most common. The bite is normal, but the upper teeth slightly overlap the lower teeth.
- Class II-retrognathism or overbite, occurs when the upper jaw and teeth severely overlap the bottom jaw and teeth.
- Class III- prognathism or underbite, occurs when the lower jaw protrudes or juts forward, causing the lower jaw and teeth to overlap the upper jaw and teeth.

Speech
A
- Anterior crossbite especially with Class lll may cause distortion of
- Also may interfere with placement of labiodental sounds /f,v/. Will compensate with lower teeth. Sounds ok ? Do you work on changing?
- Class ll and openbite may cause lip incompetence and interfere w/ labial sounds
- Sometimes no speech therapy until complete orthodontia and surgery.

A
- Supernumerary teeth (extra teeth)
- Missing teeth
- Also note poor oral hygiene or obvious dental caries
