Define free oscillation

A

It oscillate with no energy gain or loss, oscillate with constant amplitude, as no external force on it

fp=1/2pi root(k/m)
fq = 1/2pi root (2k/m)
fr = 1/2pi root (g/l)

Simple harmonic motion

A

simple harmonic motion is defined as the oscillatory motion of a particle, whose acceleration is a directly proportional to its displacement from a fixed point, and the acceleration is always in opposite direction to its displacement
a= -omega^2 x

v= +- omega root(xo^2-x^2)

x=xo sin(omega t)
x=xo cos(omega t) extreme position

angular frequency omega
= 2pi/T or 2pi f

Energy in SHM

A

KE = 1/2 m omega ^2 (xo^2-x^2)

Define resonance

A

Resonance occurs when the resulting amplitude of the system becomes a maximum when a driving frequency of external driving force equals to natural frequency of the system

Define forced oscillation

A

continue input of energy by external applied force to accelerating system to compensate the loss due to damping in order to maintain the altitude of the oscillation
